My Makeup Mates!

OK so this was actually a dare and a promise I made to my buddies so its a bit of a joke but here goes...
So my blog is about makeup right, and this post is about some of my friends and their amazing and INSPIRATIONAL makeup!his is dedicated to you guys! Haha! ;)

I hope my friends don't mind me doing this...eek! Please don't kill me!
Unfortunately I can't mention everybody although I'd like too, so my apologies to anybody who didn't get a mention, though it might be a blessing in disguise!

Katy: Katy's eyes are beautiful and if you ever see them you will know what I am talking about! I don't know how she puts on pencil eyeliner so well :)

Kate: Kate uses Chanel foundation and her face is flawless, it doesn't even look like she's wearing make-up! How unfair:(

Hannah: Hannah has the most amazing eyeliner in the world. Her cat eyes are so perfect! I have no idea how she can do those flicks with such precision!

Ellen: You have not seen a good smokey eye until you see Ellie's, her eyes are beautiful anyway but this just makes them drop dead gorgeous!

Tessa: Tess does the best party eyes ever! I'm talking, false lashes, glitter and 2 tonnes of eyeliner and mascara! Its so stunning even strangers on the street are awestruck, "Sorry, excuse me, how did you do your eyes?"

Robyn: Its hard to descride Robyn's eyes but believe me they are gorgeous! Mascaras may claim to coat every single lash and lengthen amd volumise but honestly they should just talk to Robyn!

Edwina: Ed certainly knows how to work a bronzer and a blusher brush, I've never seen her not looking sun kissed and golden or just pefectly rosy-cheeked whether its natural or not!

Countries that Use the Most Makeup

Question: "Which countries in the world use the most makeup?"
Answer: "Read on!"

So in this post I decided it might be intersting and well, geography related if I found out what countries in the world use the most make-up and I hope I found out!

According to this very informative research report;  http://www.fastmr.com/catalog/product.aspx?productid=58043&dt=t
the U.S.A. has the biggest makeup market, while Brazil has the best market for potential growth. In Europe, Russia and the U.K lead the field in the biggest makeup markets. Japan is still dominating Asia's makeup market but China is fast catching up!

But one must remember the makeup usage varies from country to country. The country's culture hugely affects the type of makeup and the amount of makeup used. makeup usage depends on the country as does the product features and benefits desired by the consumer.

So I guess thats all for now. Byeeeee!

Top 10 Weirdest Ingrediants EVER

Ok so I thought that fish scales in mascara was weird but apparently (according to this site: http://thebeautybrains.com/2008/07/23/the-10-strangest-ingredients-used-in-cosmetics/) it gets even weirder so here goes!

 I hope your sitting comfortably!

 10: PLACENTA
It is claimed* that placenta is the wonder ingredient in keeping our skin wrinkle free and gives our hair that glossy shine.
(*note these claims have never been proven)

9: WHALE VOMIT
Thankfully this has now been mostly replaced by synthetic alternatives but whale vomit can be used found in some perfumes. So next time you spritz on your Chanel No5 spare a thought for the poor whale who wasn't feeling very well! (Please note I have no idea whether or not Chanel uses whale vomit in its perfumes.)

8: COCHINEAL BEETLES
These beetles when boiled, crushed and dried actually produce a deep crimson red colour which is versatile enough to be used in most beauty products.

7: WASTE COOKING OIL
According to scientists a surfactant can be made from waste cooking oil that can help regenerate damaged skin cells.

6: HUMAN BREAST MILK
I honestly have NO idea about this one but some people swear by it?! You didn't hear it from me!

5: BIRD POOP
The Geisha Facial comes with a big price tag and a big scoop of Nightingale poop...some say its great for the skin...
4: BULL SEMEN
Some salons in Europe believe that the protein in bull semen is the way to go if ant shiny hair. Maybe don't try this at home!

3: SNAKE VENOM
Snake Venom is the new and improved way to combat wrinkles, again this has not been proven . Although some believe it works the same way as Botox but whether or not this is a good thing is up to you so...

2: CHICKEN BONE MARROW
Sorry guys I have no idea about this one! Does a good source of glucosamine sound familiar?

1: COW DUNG
Yep, yet again I'm back to the dung but this stuff is supposed to make a lovely sweet smelling vanilla fragrance!

The Origins of Makeup

Ever wondered wher your blusher actually came from? Want to know where eyeliner originated? Never fear cause I am here and I will explain everything! So here goes...

Mascara: Egypt is the birthplace of mascara, it was here that the Egyptians first blended kohl, crocodile poop, honey and water for those famous Cleopatra eyes!

Lipstick: About 5000 years ago the ladies of Mesopotamia smeared crushed semi-precious jewels onto their lips for that luscious look!

Blusher: This came from the far east I'm afraid I can't be more precise.

Eyeliner: Yet again it was the women of Egypt and Mesopotamia who began the use of eyeliner which was copied by the Arabs.

Lipgloss: This wonder stuff was invented by Max Factor in America to help achieve those lovely lips. It was used in the entertainment industry so that actresses would have shiny lips on screen.

Eye Shadow: Yep this stuff is thanks to the Egyptians.

Foundation: Yet again this is from the far east.

Shampoo: The word "shampoo" comes from the Hindi/Urdu word champo to massage with oil. Therefore we can conclude that the idea of modern shampoo comes from India.

Soap: The very first mention of soap comes from the area of the  Tigris and Euphrates rivers. This region is known as Mesopotamia, the same country where the wheel originated from!

The Truth About Mascara!

I will be the first to admit that I love mascara, even though I don't wear too much make-up, a quick swipe with the mascara wand makes me feel a lot more comfortable. I can even go as far to say that without a coat of mascara I feel naked!

I really do not see the point in covering your face in 7 layers of foundation along with bronzer, powder, blusher...It just doesn't do it for me, personally I don't find it overly attractive (unless its done well and in secondaary school thats kinda unlikelym - no offence anyone!)and kinda fake. However I completely agree with the wonders of mascara which actually accentuates intead of masking.

Unfortunately theres some pretty nasty stuff in mascara but thankfully "bat poop" is not one of them - Phew!

To help get us in the mood here's the history of mascara, enjoy!:

  • the first masccara product was invented by  Eugene Rimmel in the 19th century.
  •  early mascara was invented by T.L. Williams in 1913 he went on to found Maybelline.
  • modern mascara as we know it was invented by Helena Rubenstein in 1957.
The basic ingredients in mascara are oil, water and wax(like I talked about in my last post) For the pigments carbon is used for black while iron oxide is used to make brown.  Luckily enough "bat poop" is not present in mascara but the crystalline form of guanine is. Guanine is derived from the spanish word "guano" meaning dung - eww! Thankfully mascara does not contain "guano" but it does contain fish scales - eh yuck! So the next time your coating your lashes in another layer of mascara, spare a thought for the poor fish from the Atlantic! (Honestly I don't know if the fish was from the Atlantic, poetic licence please?!)

Heres another video about some of the not so nice stuff thats in our cosmetics...toxics in toxixs out...

What Is Make-Up Made of?

Ok so this week I'm going to find out what is actually going into our favourite make-up products and if its actually safe!

So first lets take a look at what women voted their favourite products this year! An esteemed panel of judges from "Elle" magazine voted Dolce and Gabbana Gloss Fusion Lipstick their best lipstick of 2011, while "Lancome Doll Eyes" mascara stole the prize for best mascara and "Dior Diorskin Forever Flawless perfection Fusion Wear Makeup" was vited best foundation among several other products.

Don't all these products sound lovely? I know that I would just love to have them but maybe not so much after I find out whats inside them! Eek!

So on average your standard cosmetics contains: wax, oil, alcohol and pigment. But where do all these materials come from? well, there are 3 types of waxes; carnauba (did i spell that right?:L), beeswax and candelilla. Carnauba wax comes from a palm tree native to Brazil, while candelilla wax comes from the desert plant of the same name found in the Chichuahuan Desert- weird or what?! And castor oil comes from plants grown around the Mediterranean. So far so good, everything seems pretty safe and sound but not for long...

Lead (i.e poison!), coal tar (toxic!), lake colors and carmine are some of the harmful ingredients going into your favourite red lippy- eek!
In other words your slapping on the same stuff on the roads onto your face...not so nice...:L

Here's a quick video to give you an idea about how some cosmetics are made, enjoy!

Next week I'm going to continue the investigation into mascara just wait and see!
